The first program was organized under the Scheduled Tribe Sub-Plan in Village Fatau, Samalta, Kalsi Block, Dehradun. The program was presided over by Dr. M. Madhu, Director of the Institute. The program was started with ICAR songs and after that, all the honorable guests and farmers were welcomed by Dr. Raman Jeet Singh, Senior Scientist (Agronomy), Team Leader of Scheduled Tribe Sub-Plan. After this, Dr. Dharamveer Singh, Principal Scientist (Soil Science), Head of the Department of Soil science and Agronomy, informed about the history of World Soil Day and the importance of this day in today's context. Dr. Dharamveer Singh provided detailed information to the farmers about balanced nutrition management in crops and soil health testing. In the same sequence, is training for farmers on compost making and balanced nutrition management was also presented. A documentary video released by the ICAR was also shown in this regard. Thereafter, Dr. M. Madhu, Director of the Institute, gave a lecture on the functioning of the Institute and how the Institute is contributing to the progress of farmers and how it is contributing to the natural conservation management of the Himalayan states.
In this sequence, Dr. M. Muruganandanam, Principal Scientist (Fisheries), and Coordinator of Scheduled Caste and Tribe Sub-Plan, gave information about the programs conducted by the scheme for the farmers. Thereafter, village head Shri Sunil Kumar Chauhan thanked the institute for providing agricultural material and agriculture-based information etc. During the program, the oath on Soil Day was administered by Dr. Dharamveer Singh. In the program, all the scientists highlighted the importance of soil and water conservation in the hill farming scenario and stressed upon the farmers to make farming profitable by adopting soil and water conservation methods. Thereafter, Director Dr. M. Madhu also distributed grass cutting machines to the farmers associated with Agriculture. This program was coordinated and organized by Dr. Raman Jeet Singh and in making this program successful, Dr. Uday Mandal, Senior Scientist (Soil and Water Engineering), Dr. Abhimanyu Jhajharia, Scientist (Agricultural Economics), Mr. Rakesh Kumar (Chief Technical Officer), Mr. Mudit Mishra (Technical Assistant), Mrs. Varsha Gupta (Technical), Mr. Kamal Kishore and Mrs. Madhu (Assistant Cushion Employee) made their valuable contribution. At the end of the program, vote of thanks was given by Dr. Abhimanyu Jhajharia. Total 74 farmers, participated in this program. The program was concluded with the national anthem.
The second programme on World Soil Day was celebrated under the Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan (SC-SP) in Kathar Panchayat, Kalsi Block, Dehradun Uttarakhand by Indian Institute of Soil and Water Conservation, Dehradun (ICAR-IISWC). This year the theme of World Soil Day celebration was “Soil and water: Source of life”, which highlights the nature of activities taken up by ICAR-IISWC, Dehradun at the Khatar Panchayat. Dr Trisha Roy, Dr Devideen Yadav, Dr. Deepak Singh and Dr. Anupam Barh coordinated the program under the overall coordination of Dr. D.V. Singh, Head, Division of Soil Science and Agronomy. The program was conducted in the premises of Primary School at Kofti village, Khatar Panchayat, where almost 115 people including farmers, farm family members and primary school students participated.
As a part of the program, a video clip by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research was shown to the participants highlighting the importance of balanced fertilization and soil health. Along with this the participants were also made aware of the work of ICAR-IISWC, Dehradun in the domain of soil and water conservation. The Institute distributed 175 GSM silpaulin sheet (12 kits) for lining of in-situ farm pond and micronutrient fertilizers (50 kg ZnSO4) for integrated nutrient management in Rabi crops in the Khatar Panchayat. Dr. Deepak Singh indicated that the in-situ farm ponds will play an important role to collect the water and make it readily available for farmers, enabling them to employ it for irrigation and various other agricultural purposes. Dr. Trisha Roy and Dr. Devideen Yadav spoke about the importance of proper soil health management and how soil and water go hand in hand and are equally essential for sustenance of life. Leaflets’ regarding practices to enhance soil health was distributed among the farmers. Dr. Anupam Barh highlighted how various agroforestry measures can enhance soil health and water availability in the area. The program was culminated with an oath taking ceremony reminding each individual about the importance of soil and water in our lives. The team tried to press on the importance of adopting the suggested soil and water conservation measures demonstrated to the villagers since the adoption of the villages since May, 2023. This program was coordinated and organized by Dr. Trisha Roy, Dr. Anupam Barh, Dr. Deepak Singh and Dr. Devideen Yadav and technically assisted by Mrs. Varsha Gupta (Technical), Mr. Kamal and Mr. Vivek.
The next programme on World Soil Day-2023 was conducted at ICAR- IISWC Research Farm, Selakui in collaboration with Dolphin (P.G.) Institute of Bio-Medical & Natural Sciences, Manduwala, Dehradun. Officer In-charge (Farm) and Sr. Scientist Dr. M. Sankar, Dr. Lekh Chand and the Head of the Forestry Department & Professors of the of Dolphin institute gave information about soil, its role in agriculture, its degradation and erosion and conservation to the students. After this field visit was conducted on different experiments. Drone demonstration on use of it in spraying and mapping was also demonstrated to the student. The program was ended by vote of thanks.
