A Field Day on “Parthenium Awareness Campaign and Swachhta Day” was organized at Jhandutta village, Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh on 27 August, 2024 by ICAR- Indian Institute of Soil and Water Conservation, Research Centre, Chandigarh. Dr. O. P. Premi, Principal Scientist (Agronomy) and Coordinator of this programme welcomed all the farmers taking part in this programme. He presented a brief introduction about the proliferating obnoxious weed “Parthenium”, its spread and impact on plant and human health. He also discussed different options available for its control. Farmers were also informed about how to prepare manures from Parthenium by mixing with cow dung slurry and urea and covering the pit with soil layers. Dr. Brij Lal Lakaria, Head of the Centre, discussed about management of Parthenium practically in day to day life for better crop production preventing decrease in soil fertility due to Parthenium proliferation. The farmers actively participated in the discussion and exchanged their views. They agreed that for efficient management of Parthenium, it should be removed/uprooted from fields at early stage of growth before flowering for reducing competition with crops as well as sustaining crop production. After discussion, a field campaign was arranged to aware the community. Parthenium creating nuisance in nearby area was uprooted by the farmers and participants of the campaign. Also, the adults of Maxican beetle procured from ICAR-Indian Institute of Weed Research, Jabalpur, Zygogramma bicolorata was released in the Parthenium dominated area as a biological control. Dr. Ram Prasad, Principal Scientist also shared his views on this occasion. Dr. Manoj Kumar, Scientist (Ag. Engg.) and Co-coordinator of this event proposed a formal vote of thanks.
