The ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil and Water Conservation, Research Centre-Vasad organized International Bamboo Day on 18th September, 2024. Dr. Jagdish Patil (Senior Manager, Bank of Baroda) was the Chief Guest of the program. On this auspicious occasion, 100 plants of spiny bamboo (Bambusa bambos) were planted in the sensitive area of the research farm. Around 60 students of Anand Agricultural University, Anand along with their teachers and 20 staff members of Vasad Centre joined Bamboo plantation. Dr. Patil addressed the students and emphasized that bamboo, being fast growing plant has important role in soil and water conservation and climate change mitigation. Dr. M.J. Kaledhonkar, Head, ICAR-IISWC, Research Centre, Vasad also shared his thoughts on bamboo. He mentioned that bamboo is multipurpose plant and can be important input for agriculture-based industry. It could be used for furniture, papermaking, fuel, bio-fuel, airport construction, soil water conservation, toothbrush, etc. It has potential to replace plastic. Dr. Dinesh Jinger, Scientist (Agronomy) & Program coordinator shared his views on International Bamboo Day and highlighted its importance. He urged the students and farmers to plant at least one bamboo plant in the name of mother. Dr. D. Dinesh, Senior Scientist (Soil Science) elaborated that bamboo leaves are useful in making vermicomposting. He conducted a visit of compost unit at research farm. At the end, Dr. Nandha Kumar N., Scientist (Fruit Science) given formal vote of thanks.
